2002 Western States Horse Summit Update

By Bonnie Davis

The California based Western States Horse Summit will feature two full days of presentations covering topics pertaining to continued equestrian uses of trails and open spaces. Nationwide the closures and restrictions on horse trails is having an impact on the overall pleasure trail riding industry. Summit 2002 is organized to answer some of those 'often used excuses' for trail closures!

Kathleen Hayden, CSHA and Backcountry Horseman of California member, will host a panel discussion of RS2477. RS2477 is a little know 'on the books' federal law which is keeping trails open throughout the country. Hayden will explain how RS2477 can be utilized to keep trails open and how RS2477 can be applied to reopening closed trails.

Other topics and speakers will explain the new insurance coverage and liabilities for "HIPAA: Insurance Coverage for Horseowners". How to figure economic values. "Clean Water" requirements. The latest "Update: Weed Free Feed". What are the latest facts on the spread westward of the "West Nile Virus" and other issues during the May 29th and 30th 2002 Western States Horse Summit.

Hosted by Horse Expo at Cal Expo, Sacramento, California, sponsors and contributors are welcomed. Through their efforts, the Western States Horse Summit is possible. 2002 Summit supporters are: Arabian Trail Riders Association; Ohlone Riders Unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California; Region 3 of IAHA; Bay Area Barns & Trails; National Pony Express Association; Two Horse Enterprises; Nature's Best California Certified Weed Free Pelleting; Wil Howe Ranch and individuals, Julie Suhr and Cindy Silvani.
